The Japanese Media has reported that Eath quake with magnitude-7.3 has struck off the coast of northeastern Japan. The Area where the Earthquake and Tsunami hit last year. Also reports are out that a minor tsunami hit northeast Japan today, after a powerful undersea quake struck off the coast which was devastated in last year’s quake-tsunami disaster.

Japanese Nuclear Regulation Authority said that, no reports had been submitted about problems at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, which is being operated by TEPCO., the Onagawa nuclear power plant, operated by Tohoku Electric Power Company, or the Tokai No. 2 nuclear power plant, operated by Japan Atomic Power Company.

TEPCO officials held a news conference and said there were no irregularities at the Fukushima No. 1 or No. 2 nuclear plants. Monitoring posts also did not detect any unusually high radiation readings.
The Nuclear Regulation Authority also said there were no problems at the nuclear fuel reprocessing facility at Rokkasho, Aomori Prefecture, operated by Japan Nuclear Fuel Ltd.

The future of Japan’s nuclear reactors, a product of a long-time central government policy, is at the center of debate in campaigning for the Dec. 16 Lower House election. It will be the nation’s first national vote since the meltdowns at the Fukushima plant, the worst nuclear accident since the 1986 Chernobyl disaster.

After the Fukushima disaster, all the country’s reactors were shut down for safety checks, and only two have been allowed to resume operations. The government has assumed that many more will be declared safe and restarted despite local opposition.
 The government’s policy (Link) proposes two rules regarding nuclear power: It suggests a maximum 40-year life span for all reactors and states that no new nuclear construction should be permitted.
