Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) of India has proposed to convert 60 cities in India to complete "Solar Cities". North East Indian state of Tripura is now selected to construct a model solar city, which will be in Agartala.
The Total cost if this model project is about Rs. 453 crores, of which MNRE will bear 90% and the rest will be beared by Tripura.
The Tripura Renewable Energy Development Authority (TREDA) and urban development department, in association with MNRE, would implement the ambitious scheme.
How it will be implemented:
Solar hot water systems will be installed in all major hotels, nursing homes, school hostels, government houses and bungalows, hospitals, tourist lodges, temples and the even in the state governor's residence. Solar energy will be used to power the city's street lights and other lights in public areas.
Selected cities in North east india include:
- Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh
- Agartala in Tripura
- Guwahati and Jorhat in Assam
- Aizawl in Mizoram
- Imphal in Manipur
- Kohima and Dimapur in Nagaland
Theft of battery and solar panel is a major problem facing the authorities in implementing the program.
