Indian railways considering a 1MW Utility scale roof top solar installation in New Delhi Railway Station.

The Indian Railways, the owner of one of the largest Rail networks in the world, is all set to embrace Solar. The Railways administration is planning to install 1 MW of Solar Power on the roofs of one of the busiest railway stations in the World, New Delhi Railway station.

New Delhi railway station handles over 300 trains with 16 platforms and about 360,000 passengers everyday, making it extremely power hungry.

If everything goes as planned New Delhi Railway station roof tops will be producing pure green power as early as 2013. But the solar project will be installed in phases rather than on a single run. This project will utilize public- private partnerships.

According to Divisional Rail Manager AK Sachan, the project will cost nearly Rs. 15 Million ( $270,000). And he further added that Indian Railways is planning to sign a PPA for 5-10 years, which allows them to extract power from the plant at a fixed Tariff. This project once fully operational will reduce the power consumption of the New Delhi station, which entirely depends on the state grid for power. Sachan also added that the project will be completed by a private contractor, but the name was not announced.

Indian Railway's is seeing this as a pilot project and it aims to bring solar power to more stations in the near future, once the New Delhi project is successful.
