In India, Solar is making inroads in areas which we couldn't even imagined a few years back. Inox Air products (link), the Indian Arm of Pennsylvania based Air Products (link) has said in it's press release that the group has received an order for India's first Solar powered Hydrogen Fueling Station from University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES).

The Solar Powered Fueling station will be a part of the mass public transit bus fueling and vehicle demonstration project planned by UPES.

The Project will be located in the Solar Energy Center near Delhi and the proposed fueling station will generate hydrogen from solar energy via an electrolyzer. According to Air Products, the project is expected to be Online by July 2013. The Project is entirely funded by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy(MNRE). Indian Oil Corporation is also collaborating with UPES with this Project.

Nigel Gibson, managing director - Air Products India said in the Press release that, “The hydrogen generated at this station will be 100 percent renewable and illustrates both India’s commitment to developing greener alternate energy sources and Air Products’ hydrogen fueling capabilities. The UPES project will act as a springboard for many more opportunities in the automotive and telecommunication sectors in India,

Though this is a demonstration project, India is planning to significantly reduce Carbon footprint by introducing more Hydrogen powered fueling stations. This is cemented by the fact that the current Solar Powered Hydrogen Fueling station, once complete will be the third Hydrogen Fueling station project in India. All of these projects are based in Delhi. Also this Project will give Solar Industry another segment to tap on in India. The recent project in Pragati Maidan, which was built by Air Products India uses a  hydrogen fueling dispenser which is currently serving hydrogen powered auto rickshaws which are deployed in the area by the support of the Indian Government.
