One Third of Tiruchi's Streetlights are being converted to Solar

Solar Lighting is slowly entering into the main stream in India. Tiruchi, a district of Tamil Nadu is planning to convert one third of their Streetlights to Solar Powered Ones within the next four years. 

These Solar Powered Streetlights is being installed with reference to the recently announced scheme under the rural development department by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. 

According to G.Radha, project director, District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), Rs 1.95 Crore was assigned to install 865 Streetlights in the time period of 2011-12, Also the same amount was also sanctioned for the time period 2012-2013. Though the installation process is progressing as fast as intended, still they have installed about 500 streetlights which have been sanctioned in 2011-2012.

It's Not just DRDA scheme, Streetlights are also being installed under Tamil Nadu Village Habitations Improvement (THAI) Scheme in all 404 panchayats during a five-year period. 

How are these lights installed?

1. Standalone lights are installed in remote and isolated villages

2. New lights in rows of 10 are being installed in villages with accute voltage fluctuations. 

3. This Category involves conversion of existing streetlights into solar-powered ones, also in rows of 10 lights. For these lighting systems, 500 watt solar power storage units would be established at a common place.
