An Indian Tiger in Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, the second largest wildlife sanctuary in the state of Kerala, has planned to install 300 kilometer Solar Fence to keep wild life at bay. The Sanctuary, which is also known in the Name 'Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary' was established in 1973 and is a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.

As the first phase of the Solar Project, the Kerala Forest Development Corporation has installed 34 Kilometer of Solar fence, through the Thirunelly grama panchayat. The Minister for Forests K.B. Ganesh Kumar inaugurated this first phase on Tuesday. The first phase of Solar fencing was finished with financial support from NABARD. 

300 Kilometer Solar Fence Planned

As a part of increasing the security, Kerala government is planning to extend this 34 Kilometer Solar fence to 300 Kilometers, with an estimated total cost of 6 crores. As a part of this project, the Kerala Forest Development Corporation has identified 100 locations, through out the reserve.

The fence which is erected on poles, with a height of 1.6 meters, will be powered using solar panels and the line will be energized by a High Voltage value of 10 KW. Kerala Forest Development Corporation will also maintain the Solar fence for five years.
