Kerala's Jails to embrace Solar Panels!!

Jails in kerala are all set to get the power from solar energy, all thanks to the green initiatives of kerala's Jail Department.

Following the Kerala Governments Massive Solar action plan, Jail Department of kerala have submitted an action plan to both central and state governments. As per the plan Jail department plans to install solar panels in all Jails in kerala and produce 20 MW of solar power. Jail department of kerala wants the project to be funded using Indian Revenue Bill Energy Program.

The Total project cost is estimated at about Rs60 crores ($10.8 Million). Currently the Jail department is installing solar systems worth Rs. 25.5 Crores ($4.5 Million) in three Central Jails. These systems will be online within two months.

By installing solar plants in all Jails, the department plans to reduce spending on electricity and gas bills by about Rs. 2 Crores ($0.35 Million). The department plans to utilize open spaces and rooftop's to install the panels.

Jail department also plans to sell extra energy to KSEB, states only Distribution Utility at a rate of Rs. 4.5/Unit ($0.08).
