Oerlikon, a premium partner of the Sauber F1 Team has constructed a solar park in it's base in Hinwil.

This project became one of the largest solar car ports in Switzerland when it started producing power. The solar car port consists of 1573 thin-film silicon PV modules, covering over an area estimated at about 2250 square metres.

It just not end there, A roof of one of the factory buildings was also housed with solar PV modules.

Project nearly took six weeks to construct. This Solar project installation with a nameplate capacity of 173 kW is capable of producing 155,600 kWhrs of pure green power per year which is equivalent to power 44 average swiss households. For visitors info Sauber has also installed a display panel which shows information on the solar PV system's current output and the energy production both on that particular day and in total till date.

Sauber CEO Monisha Kaltenborn said that “We are extremely proud of this sustainable extension to our company headquarters,”  she also said, “For us, local power generation via a photovoltaic installation not only represents another contribution to fulfilling our environmental responsibilities, it also makes financial sense. The installation is cost-efficient and also allows a large number of vehicles to be parked under cover. On top of that, it fits in well visually with our factory as a whole, which is already highlighted by the modernistic glass architecture of the wind tunnel building's façade.”

“We're delighted to be able to support the Sauber F1 Team with these concrete steps as part of its commitment to protecting the environment,” Oerlikon CEO Michael Buscher added, “This solar park fully showcases the specific advantages of our solar technology, such as low costs, high operational effectiveness even in cloudy conditions, and a short energy payback time.”

This solar PV project showcased Sauber Motorsport's major involvement environmental initiatives. In April, the Saubers environment management system was awarded ISO 14001 certification and, also since early May, the F1 team has been greenhouse gas neutral.
