Ciel et Terre and IFP Energies nouvelles (IFPEN) has released "Hydrelio©", what they describe as the world's first large scale floating solar power generation system.
Both IFP Energies nouvelles (IFPEN) and Ciel et Terre had signed an R&D agreement in 2011 to develop a floating Solar Power Generation concept. IFP Energies nouvelles (IFPEN) is a public-sector
research, innovation and training center active in the fields of energy,
transport and the environment in France, while Ciel et Terre, is a developer of large-scale photovoltaic solar power generation systems in France.
What is Hydrelio©
Hydrellio is nothing but a basic module, which contains two blow molded floats made of plastic (HDPE) and the first float supports the solar panel and second one can be used as a link which will cater maintenance access. Solar islands are formed by joining these floats, using an ultra-resistant system of connection pins.
Addresses the Land issue:
Hydrelio, addresses problems which are usually associated with Utility Scale Solar Power Generation such as land availability and landscape impacts. It also helps in converting quarry lakes, irrigation
ponds, water treatment plant lagoons, dams into Solar Power Generating Facilities. Also Hydrelio has another benefits like prevention of Algae growth and Evaporation of Water.
Ciel et Terre / IFPEN partnership said that the Hydrélio© Solar Floating Power Generation system can be used to construct up to 50 megawatts of Solar Power Plants. The duo said that the Hydrelio system is capble of withstanding extreme weather conditions (cyclones, typhoons), confirm the viability of the system for all climates during 20+ years.
