Bharti Airtel, India's major telecom service provider has said that it has installed 100KW non penetrating rooftop Solar power plant to run it's massive switching and routing station, Gangaganj in Lucknow.
According to Airtel, it's not going to end with this single solar project. Airtel has also unveiled it's plan to install a total of 300KW capacity projects in 6 other switching and routing stations, all over the country. There is a seen a "Walmart Solar effect" in India, which is seeing major companies backing rooftop Solar power in the Country (link), which is now pretty common in the U.S.
The Airtel Gangaganj Solar Project, according to sources has also received a 30% subsidy from Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and through the Solar Project, Airtel is expected to nullify Diesel bills to a very large extend.
Jagbir Singh, director, Network Services Group at Bharti Airtel says, "At Airtel we continuously evaluate the impact of our activities on the
society and environment. It is our constant endeavor to develop
innovative solutions that help us drive environmental conservation,".
Recently Airtel unveiled their Sustainability Report (link) for its India operations, which highlighted their approach, initiatives and future plans across
social and environmental development including energy and climate
change, waste management, customer service, digital inclusion and
community engagement.
The key takeaways from the report include, an 11% reduction in Green House Gas (GHG) emissions
per terabyte in network infrastructure in 2011-12, also they were able to save around 20 million KWh of energy through its
facilities consolidation and data centre energy efficiency initiatives.
