Landfills in India are growing in an Alarming rate and it can be considered as India’s plague. Also the Dis-used Landfills in India are also creating great concerns. But Countries like the U.S. and Malta has come across a way which we can Utilize the Dis-used Landfills in a more greener way.
It's Nothing but Landfill Solar:
In U.S the Landfill solar energy is taken seriously and this can be seen as a new bread of Solar Farms, which came online in Texas and Georgia. The "Thing" which makes the Landfill Solar a reality is the advanced Geo membrane Solar Cap Technology. The Technology can be seen in live action in Hickory Ridge Landfill Solar Energy Park in Atlanta, Georgia. By using exposed geomembrane solar cap technology, 35 acre spread land in Hickory Ridge Landfill was completely transformed into one of the largest Solar PV facilities in the whole of Georgia and world's largest solar
energy cap and the first use of the technology as a fully permitted landfill final closure system.
How the Geomembrane based Solar Farm Works:
This new Technology utilizes geomembrane anchoring system, which secures high-strength geomembrane material (60-mil reinforced TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin)) made for outdoor exposure on
roofs to the landfill like a bedsheet through the use
of vertical anchor trenches and Thin Film Solar Modules can be placed in the geomembrane-covered landfill slopes.
Also the Hickory Ridge Landfill solar energy park utilized over 7,000 thin film Solar Panels. Also another Landfill owned by Republic Services - The Tessman Road Landfill in San Antonio, Texas was also partially covered using the Geo membrane Technology.
Geomembrane cap system also provides significant other environmental and economical advantages such as,
- Production of Solar Energy
- It can avoid thousands of tons of greenhouse gases that would be emitted from
the mowing and soil replacement activities needed for long-term care of a
grass-covered cap.
- As rainwater runs off the geomembrane liner like water coming off a roof
into a gutter, reusable water can be harvested without the need for
sedimentation and cleaning.
- The installation costs of an exposed geomembrane closure are substantially less than a traditional closure.
