Promethean Power Promoters

Promethean Power Systems a Boston, MA based manufacturer and designer of rural refrigeration systems for commercial cold-storage applications in off-grid and partially electrified areas of  India has received the nomination of this year's Katerva Awards.

The Katerva Awards are considered as the pinnacle of global sustainability recognition. Through them, the best ideas on the planet are identified, refined and accelerated toward impact at a global level. Katerva Award nominees must undergo a rigorous evaluation process to be eligible for the grand prize. The practical, strategic, scientific, social and commercial aspects of each project are thoroughly analyzed through a meticulous ten month review process. More than 800 individuals participate in the nominee identification and adjudication process including six filtering phases and twelve stages of focused review.

Also in May of 2012, Promethean Power Systems became the winner of the first US-India Science and Technology Endowment Board Grant (IUSST) for its innovative refrigeration system.

So what does Promethean Power Do?

Promethean Power Manufactures Rapid Milk Chillers, which is a milk refrigeration system that eliminates the need for diesel-generator backup. The product is designed for raw milk supply networks that operate in rural areas where grid power is unreliable. This complete, rural refrigeration system features their own patent-pending rapid heat exchanger that cools milk immediately to arrest bacteria growth and maintain milk quality according to international standards.

Promethean Power’s maiden milk refrigeration unit operates with thermal energy storage technology, which needs no Electricity. This patent pending battery pack stores and releases large amounts of thermal energy rapidly and cools milk immediately, bringing the temperature of milk from 35 degrees Celsius to 4 degrees Celsius almost instantly. Each refrigeration unit costs $7500 USD and has a payback period between 2 and 4 years compared with conventional milk coolers.

 Tapping the Untapped Milk Market:

India, the world’s largest producer and consumer of milk, struggles with undependable cold-chain supply networks that result from a lack of reliable grid electricity and the high capital and operating cost of diesel refrigeration units. Much of the raw milk produced by India’s $14 billion dairy industry spoils before it can be collected and refrigerated due to high transport costs and the remote location of villages.

The Drivers:

The Startup was founded by Sorin Grama, who completed Masters of Science in Engineering & Management from MIT and Sam White, who worked in Economist Group. Also Promethean's Indian Operation is headed by Rajat Gupta, who finished his MBA in Harvard Business School and Mechanical Engineering from IIT.
