Abu Dhabi, the oil rich nation had released massive plans to go green, and as a part of the initiative, the UAE has completed the largest concentrated Solar Project in the world, in terms of operational capacity.
Named the Shams 1 Solar Project, had an investment of $600 Million and utilized nearly 258,048 mirrors to get an installed power capacity of 100MW. Also the plant is expected to displace nearly 175,000 tons of carbon emission each year, which is equivalent to removing 15,000 cars from the road.
The plant uses Abengoa Solar’s ASTRO (Abengoa Solar Trough) parabolic
trough collectors. The ASTRO collector is based on the 150m-long
EuroTrough collector, which represents an improvement on the Luz
collectors used in the SEGS CSP plants in California. The Plant also utilized Schott PTR 70 absorber tubes and mirrors were soured from from Flabeg.
"The inauguration of Shams 1 is a breakthrough for renewable energy
development in the Middle East," said Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, CEO of
Masdar. "With the demand for energy rising exponentially, the region is
undergoing a major transformation in how it generates electricity. In
fact, the Middle East is poised for major investments in renewables, and
Shams 1 proves the economic and environmental advantage of deploying
large-scale solar projects."
Shams 1 was designed and developed by Shams Power Company, a joint
venture between Masdar (60 percent), Total (20 percent) and Abengoa
Solar (20 percent).With the addition of Shams 1, Masdar's renewable
energy portfolio accounts for almost 68 percent of the Gulf's renewable
energy capacity and close to 10 percent of the world's installed CSP
capacity.
