Why Kudankulam Nuke Plant? Instead go for Solar and Wind; L. Ramdoss

The formal Naval Chief Admiral L. Ramdoss, who was addressing the Media at Idinthakarai near Kudankulam, where the controversial first phase of the 2,000MW Nuclear Power Plant is ready to be commissioned, said that India should quit it's Nuclear Power Plans and should go for Solar and Wind Power Generation. 

Ramdoss said that instead of the High risk Nuclear Power Projects, India should tap more into the Solar and Wind Resources, as the country receives 300 bright sunny days. Also India's Poor Grid system is uncapable to effectively tap such clean energy resources.

He also stressed the fact that neither the Central government, the Russian government, NPCIL, Department of Atomic Energy or any expert from the Indian officialdom has not given any assurance on Safety.

The agitation at Idinthakarai has crossed 500 days:

 The Agitation at Idinthakarai has crossed over 500 days and it is still gaining steam. And the Protests against the Nuke Plant is rising from key environmentalists and other top officials. Binayak Sen, The national vice-president of People’s Union for Civil Liberty said that the judicial process had been misused and AERB norms were being flouted in the process of commissioning this nuclear plant.

Praful Bidwai, senior journalist, said fake cases had been foisted on the protesters. As many as 325 cases were filed against protesters involved in the agitation at Idinthakarai. Charge sheets were filed against 1,20, 000 people and 13, 350 were charged with waging a war against the State and criminal conspiracy.

As many as 8,456 persons were booked on sedition charges, 18,143 persons were accused of attempt to murder and 15,565 persons charged with destroying government properties. Sixty-six persons were arrested and nine imprisoned. Forty-five persons were released on conditional bail.

Protest even in New Year's eve:

Major Personalities from all over the Country Joined hands with thousands of Residents of Idinthakarai and other nearby coastal villages to exhibit a peaceful protest during the New Year's Eve. 

Kudankulam Nuke Plant Profile:

The Kudankulam Power plant will contain two Reactors 1,000 MW each and these will be commissioned in two phases. The Nuclear Power Corporation of India assembled the components of the reactors which was provided by Russia. Of the 2,000MW Plant, Tamil Nadu will have a share of 925 MW, Karnataka 442 MW, Kerala 266 MW and Puducherry will receive 67 MW. Also there is a unallocated share of 300MW.
